Location
The Hotel Kampa Garden is located on one of the most beautiful city islands of the world.
The „Island“ was mentioned in the 11th century for the first time. Today’s form is from the 16th century after a huge fire. After the fire all the ruins were brought in and the Kampa Island was enlarged.
The origin of contemporary name „Kampa“ is mysterious. One of many possible explations asserts, that the island took its name after Ticho Gangsel di Campo, who owned one building here. The others say that the name is derived from Latin „campus“, which means plain or field, or from old Czech „zákampí“, which means shady place.
From 15th century the island became a place of strong industrial interest, the mills and later gardens took place here. As the time was passing the aristocrats found a pleasure to have here their gardens and estate. Apart from wooden mill-wheel, which has persisted from the Mill „Huť“, we can find here the Sova´s Mill too, which later bought baker family of František Odolek. The building has been reconstructed and nowadays took a function as a Kampa Museum.
With Kampa of Prague are connected also well known names as Josef Dobrovský, famous scholar and founder of Czech studies, Jan Werich, actor and dramatist, Vladimír Holan, very influental poet. In the beginning of century you could find here first Czech president T.G.Masaryk on his favorite walk.
Not far there is probably the most tiny penetrable lane of the world, where the traffic lights for walkers were installed. If someone unattended the red light enters, takes a big risk, he will not succefully finish his route. Even one tourist stucked in in this lane and had to be rescued by firemen, water and soap.
In the vicinity of the island we find worldwide famous John Lennon´s Wall, by which people of all world honour his memory.
The Kampa Island is also popular sanctuary of film-makers, the plot of Octopuses from 2nd floor, movies of Amadeus and Mission Impossible were shooted here.
Nowadays the Kampa Island found its function mainly as a park. By the walk along Vltava you can take a rest in benches or directly with many others lay your body into lawn. Kampa is ideal place for relax.
In the summer time the island and the hotel Kampa area offers very interesting venue for cultural events and markets.
Hotel Kampa Garden is located on the right bank of the canal Certovka and some rooms can offer beautiful view of the canal itself, but also to the shadowy corners of the French Embassy park.
With its convenient location in the heart of Prague 1, all monuments are located in a pleasant distance.
