These are mostly held around Easter on Wenceslas Square and the Old Town Square, which are only about 1 km from Hotel Kampa Garden ***, via the Charles Bridge. These markets with their wooden stands offer typical Czech artefacts (wooden puppets, candles, carved kitchen utensils etc.), souvenirs from celebrations to mark the coming of spring (genuine painted and dyed eggs, traditional willow whips, small items of jewellery and bobbin lace etc.), local dishes (sausages, ham off the bone etc.) and various savoury and sweet treats and alcohol (mulled wine, beer etc.). These are accompanied by short concerts on the surrounding stages or in nearby concert halls. Don’t forget that a lot of shops also hold sales and special promotions at this time.

Walpurgis Night
(30. 4. 2019)

Return with us to ancient times and take part in the mysterious Walpurgis Night festival. On the popular Walpurgis Night (30th April and 1 May), evil and corrupt forces are more powerful, and according to superstition and myth, witches fly off to their sabbath. Walpurgis Night is a folk festival and defence against unclean forces and is usually accompanied by huge bonfires of burning wood and festivities – accompanied by good food and drink. All of the hiding places allegedly also open on this night uncovering their hidden treasures. In order for treasure-hunters to be able to protect themselves from evil forces, they should carry with them a fern flower, holy chalk and many other artefacts. A lamplight procession awaits you in Prague at Malostranské náměstí (5 minutes’ walk from our Hotel Kampa Garden ***) leading to Kampa Park where effigies of witches are usually burned.
